Bay City law enforcement has revealed that a woman who was found dead inside of her home was killed by one or more pet dogs. An autopsy performed by the Bay County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the woman passed away from several bites inflicted by two pit bull dogs. The animals were later removed from the home and taken to a nearby animal control center.

Based on the most recent statistics compiled by State Farm, Michigan is one of the top 10 states for dog bite accidents. In 2017, there were approximately 167 dog bite claims in Michigan. While Michigan is one of several states that allow victims to obtain compensation through a dog owner’s homeowners insurance policy, it is ideal to take important safety strategies and avoid being bitten by a dog. This includes knowing how to respond if you believe that a dog attack is imminent.

Give the Dog Room

Several signs suggest a dog is upset. These include the dog tensing its body, raising the hair on its neck and beck, opening its eyes widely, and flattening its ears against its head. If you notice any of these signs, you should promptly back away from the dog as calmly as possible.

Stay Still

Sometimes, it might be too late to get away from the dog. In these situations, if the dog looks as if it is about to attack you, the best advice is to remain as still as possible. Avoid moving until the dog moves away. By staying calm, you can greatly reduce the risk of being attacked.

Do Not Make Eye Contact

Dogs interpret eye contact from a person as an aggressive type of body language. This is why it is a good idea to avoid making eye contact with the dog. Most times, dogs attack because they feel threatened or think that someone is infringing on their territory.

Do Not Act on Impulses

When some people think that a dog is about to attack, they follow their natural reaction to run away. In these situations, you should avoid doing running. You should also avoid the urge to fight back. Even if staying calm does not prevent the dog from attacking, it is still best to stay calm.

Remember You Have Options

There are three options that a person has in Michigan to pursue compensation after a dog attack. These options include pursuing a lawsuit under Michigan’s dog bite statute, filing a lawsuit under the state’s common law strict liability, and filing a lawsuit asserting basic negligence principles.
