Auto Accidents Due to Road Defects
Saginaw, Flint, Traverse City and Lansing, Michigan

According to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), almost every driver will be involved in some sort of auto accident during his/her driving career. While most of these accidents will be minor, some will be catastrophic, resulting in serious personal injury or even death. There are numerous causes of auto accidents such as:

  • Distracted drivers
  • Driving under the influence
  • Reckless drivers
  • Inexperienced drivers
  • Defective tires
  • Defective vehicles
  • Road defects

Most of these causes can be prevented or avoided; however, defects in the surface of the road often cannot be seen by the driver until it’s too late. Large potholes, shoulder drop offs, poorly marked lines, dips, and debris on the road sometimes come upon the driver so quickly that there is just no time to avoid an accident. Road defects can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, leading to collisions with other vehicles, medians, trees, etc. Poorly constructed or infrequently maintained roads will not meet safety standards that are required by state and federal laws.

The only way to prevent auto accidents due to defects in the road is to drive defensively and be on the constant lookout for defects on the roadways. Roads, over time, can develop defects due to poor maintenance or jobs left undone by road construction workers. Unfortunately, some states will put off road maintenance to save money, putting drivers at risk. The following is a list of some of the more common examples of road defects:

  • Uneven pavement
  • Potholes
  • No guardrails
  • Shoulder drop-offs
  • Lack of signs to indicate construction zones ahead or road defects

If you were injured in a car accident due to a road defect, or if you lost a loved one in an accident that was caused by a defective road, you are most likely entitled to monetary compensation for damages to property and yourself.
