Seat Belts and Car Accidents

Every day we get into our car to go to work, to go to the grocery store, to take our kids to school, or just to run our errands. Driving is a part of almost everyone's daily life. What we do not anticipate is that we will get into our car and be involved in a devastating car accident. Automobile accidents are extremely common on our roads, and more likely than not we will all be involved in a car accident in our lifetime.

Seat belts provide the best protection in the case of an automobile accident. Car accidents can result in a number of injuries, including:

As driving becomes more and more a part of our every day life, we tend to neglect wearing our seatbelt, thinking we are just running to the store, or that we could never be involved in a car accident. This type of neglectful thinking is what gets people killed. You could be the safest driver on the road, but remember, you are joined on the road by countless other drivers. Do you trust them to drive safely as well? It is estimated that seat belts save almost 9,000 lives per year, yet only about 60% of drivers wear their seat belts. It takes less than a minute to buckle up and it could save your life.

Teens and Driving

Getting a driver's license is something all teenagers look forward to. A driver's license gives teens a sense of adulthood and independence. However, along with a driver's license also comes an immense amount of responsibility, not only for their own safety, but for the safety of all the other drivers, passengers and pedestrians on the roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), teenagers are more likely to be involved in an car accident than any other age group. The NHTSA also reports that automobile accidents are the number one cause of death for those between the ages of 16 and 21. Teenagers and new drivers tend to be more distracted by things like cell phones, MP3 players, and even their passengers.

In addition to distractions, speed, reckless driving, peer pressure, impulsive behavior, alcohol and drug use are all contributing factors to the increased accident rate among teenagers. Several states, including Michigan, have enacted a graduated driver license program. Graduated driver license programs put certain restrictions on new drivers for a certain period of time. The restrictions are removed after the probationary period if the new driver has shown he or she is a responsible driver by avoiding moving violations and car accidents, and, in some cases, passing another road test.
