Age Discrimination on the Job
In this hurting and sluggish economy, record numbers of age discrimination claims are being filed as older workers have their positions eliminated, are being laid off or otherwise losing their jobs. Companies know that older, experienced workers command high salaries, larger pensions, and higher costs to some of their benefits and it can increase the bottom line if those employees are no longer part of the company. Sounds pretty sinister, doesn't it?
Fortunately for Americans over the age of 40, the 1967 Age Discrimination in Employment Act exists for their protection. This civil rights act protects employees 40 and older from discrimination in hiring practices, promotions, terminations and compensation. The EEOC enforces these laws and takes complaints concerning age discrimination violations.
