What is a Contingency Fee?

A contingency fee refers to a fee that is payable to an attorney only when the result is favorable to the client. Certain attorneys are willing to work on a "contingency fee basis," which means no legal fees are payable unless and until there is a successful resolution to your case. The attorney is then entitled to a certain previously agreed upon percentage of the financial compensation you receive. No legal fee is owed in the event of an unsuccessful result.

For example, a contingency fee agreement allows those who have been injured as a result of an automobile accident or medical malpractice to obtain legal representation when they do not have the resources to hire an attorney at the beginning of a lawsuit.

The most common cases handled on a contingency fee basis are accident and personal injury lawsuits. When you suffer an injury due to the negligence or actions of someone else, you are entitled to financial compensation for the damages and losses you have suffered. A contingency fee agreement makes it possible for you to obtain quality legal representation no matter what your financial status may be.

The law firm chosen to represent you on a contingency fee basis must have the experience and financial resources to pursue your claim to a successful outcome.
