The Safest Cars
The news of historic lows being reported by car makers such as GM and Ford is often attributed to the struggling economy. However, those who study car safety attribute it to the fact that GM and Ford have failed to keep up with the competition where safety is concerned. When you set out to buy a new vehicle there is probably nothing more important than safety. Even with today's struggling economy, safety is trumping low prices. Automobile accidents are extremely common on our highways, and cause a number of injuries, including death.
Forbes released its list of the safest cars on the road earlier this year, and only one vehicle made by GM was included in that list. Ford missed the list completely. According to Forbes, midsize cars and SUVs are the safest cars on the road these days. Superior technology and construction were two of the leading factors that lead Forbes to declare which cars were the safest. Those brands that were featured the most on the list were foreign-based carmakers Honda, Acura, and Subaru.
While some carmakers are concentrating on making smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles, they are far less safe than midsize cars and SUVs. Smaller vehicles provide less protection for their driver and passengers. The farther away the front of the vehicle is from the driver, the less severe the injuries are when involved in an accident, according to the Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
