Driving While Under the Influence of Texting

A train crash last year in California injured 135 and killed 25 people. Your initial thought is probably that the train conductor was drinking. However, it was texting that was to blame. There have been numerous crashes around the country recently that have been attributed to texting while driving. The New York Times published a story last month about a study released by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute stating that texting increases the risk of a crash by over 20 percent.

Currently, 14 states have laws that ban texting while driving. The problem of driving while texting is so serious that there are numerous legislators in Washington, D.C. trying to pass a bill currently before the Senate that would require states to ban texting while driving, or face the loss of 25 percent of their highway funds. The Transport Research Laboratory in the United Kingdom has even released as study showing that driving while texting is more dangerous than driving while under the influence of alcohol or marijuana.

Car accidents result in a number of injuries, including death. Distractions, such as cell phones, are a serious contributing factor to automobile accidents. Texting not only requires you to look down at your phone, but also requires movement of your fingers, which means you are not looking at the road, and you only have one hand on the wheel - a disastrous combination.
